The Guinness Bring It to Life Awards is the GB part of the Arthur Guinness Fund, which was set up to honour Arthur Guinness' commitment to supporting local communities and those less fortunate – "From one to many". The Arthur Guinness Fund is a global programme from Guinness & Co donating €6 million to support programmes and projects around the world that enable and empower people with skills and opportunities to deliver a measurable benefit at the community level. The Fund was born from the Guinness' 250th anniversary in 2009, when the brand celebrated 250th years since Arthur Guinness signed the original lease at St James' Gate brewery.

A social entrepreneur is someone who has a social heart & a business head. They use the skills, passion and drive of a successful business entrepreneur and apply them to delivering transformational change in society. They are innovative in addressing social needs and are passionate about making a difference to society. They are people from many different walks of life, with a track record or passion to make things happen
Arthur Guinness is considered to be the social entrepreneur of his day; he was innovative in his approach to investing in the health & well being of his employees and the wider community.
UnLtd is a charitable organisation that promotes social entrepreneurship in the UK. They will be selecting, supporting and developing the social entrepreneurs we work with.
Rathbone is a UK-wide voluntary youth sector organisation providing opportunities for young people to transform their life-circumstances by re-engaging with learning, discovering their ability to succeed and achieving progression to further education, training and employment. Rathbone in association with Diageo Great Britain, will supply volunteers with the relative skill set and training and vocational skills to help bring the social enterprises to life.
Two levels of award will be available for entrepreneurs wishing to develop and run socially entrepreneurial projects that benefit the public or community. 13 Catalyst awards worth £2,200 will be allocated for people who need the running costs to get their idea off the ground and 6 Development awards worth £15,000 will be allocated for established social entrepreneurs to get their ventures fully operational.
The Guinness Bring it to Life Awards is for social entrepreneurs living in Great Britain with initiatives that will benefit communities in Great Britain. Initiatives can be a new or an existing initiative delivered in a new way, which incorporates social and/or environmental aims. From setting up sports club for people on low incomes who may not be able to afford membership fees and kits, to creating support networks with benefits for people who have lost loved ones, every viable idea will be considered. For 2010, social entrepreneurs from London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester regions are eligible to apply.
For year one of the programme, the above highly populated cities have been selected simply to represent a cross section of the UK.
Entrants must be 25-35 at the time of submitting their application.
At 25, people have the life experience think more seriously about launching a social entrepreneurship initiative.
No, it is only one entry per person.
All applications will be reviewed against our criteria. All applications within criteria will be considered for support. The initial review will be conducted by executives from UnLtd, Rathbone and Diageo Great Britain. An initial selection of projects will be shortlisted and more detailed information about the projects and the people behind them will then be required. The final shortlist will then be invited to present their idea to the panel.
Project submissions will be being reviewed on three criteria; innovation, reach & scale and impact.
The judges are experienced professionals with the background and skills to help identify the most impactful and innovative projects.
The application process closes on 23rd July 2010. The shortlist of applicants will be selected in August 2010 and the successful applicants will be announced by the end of September 2010.
UnLtd has a programme called Live UnLtd, which provides opportunities, funding and support for young people with ideas to change the world around them and create entrepreneurial solutions to social issues.
Live UnLtd is the biggest initiative of its kind ever undertaken. In its first five years of operation it will provide opportunities to over 20,000 young people in the UK in what will be world's largest learning on engagement with young people. Live UnLtd will create a new culture of social leaders, where young people are recognised as the solution to social problems rather than the cause.
In partnership with leading youth brands and delivery providers, Live UnLtd will create a series of Best Practice Guides from its learnings which will form the benchmark for effective engagement with young people in the UK. Live UnLtd recognises the ever increasing demands from UK society to acknowledge positive social returns on investments; from tackling climate change to addressing racial tensions.
