The Bing Crosbie is a lovely anecdote, Sisiphus. My wife is very partial to musicals (we don't attend enough of them) and can also identify most classic films in 2 frames. I'm somewhat taken aback at the number of psychiatrists or psychologists that I've met who have some theatre connection - even if it is participating in a show at the Edinburgh Festival.
There is something relentlessly uplifting about even moral/pyrrhic victories against adversity, no matter how wretched the ending to those harrowing tales. My Best Beloved informs me that this is known as experiencing a vicarious negentropic experience, where bad circumstances are transmuted into good effects or at least enlightenment. Hum, sure.
