I've been working on walkit.com for a number of years now.  It has emerged out of a career focused on changing people's attitudes to how they see the world around them.  Whether working as a campaigner in a pressure group as an advisor in business, I've been consistently motivated by the need to radically change how society operates in order to maximise the quality of all our lives and minimise the damage we’re doing to the planet.

walkit.com’s mission is to transform people’s attitudes to walking in urban areas by equipping them with customised, value-added information about how to get from A to B on foot.

Walking is a great way to get around town.  It is a cheap, quick and pleasant means of making short urban journeys.  There are many converging issues – overcrowded public transport, road congestion, an increasingly overweight population  – which all point towards the need for new solutions to current mobility challenges.  walkit.com meets this need by providing a user-friendly web-based route planner that raises the profile of walking as a practical ‘mode of transport’.

Objectives

  • To establish the UK’s ‘website of first choice’ for pedestrian journey planning
  • To be the premier service provider for ‘How to find us’ walking directions on urban organisations’ websites
  • To champion a range of motivating factors - speed, health, cost, carbon saving – that will encourage people to walk more
  • To facilitate debate and action to improve the walking environment
