Phoebe Mortimer

Phoebe Mortimer won an UnLtd Level 2 award in June 2006 enabling her to run the Public Programmes for Birth Rites.Birth Rites is a series of collaborations exploring the politics and practice of childbirth. It has drawn together six artists with six health professionals who work in different settings with different approaches to childbirth. The collaborations will explore the structures and pressures within birth practices through which decisions are made and acted upon. The resulting commissions of film, text and image will feature in a touring exhibition which will open at the Glasgow Science Centre in June 2008 and travel to the Manchester Museum the following September. Public programmes support and run alongside the collaborations. They aim to draw people together to join in a national debate about childbirth and include a public forum, workshops, a website and book.
