Blogger profile

Rupert was born in North Devon and grew up in the country by the sea.  A keen interest in natural history, passed down through the family on his father’s side, led him to work as a conservation biologist in his twenties.

North Devon is a farming and fishing area and with the decline of these industries some areas have become run down – wages are low and the cost of living high.  He went off to look around the world for somewhere else to live and settle spending time travelling and working around NZ, Australia, Hawaii, the US and Canada.

Rupert was inspired by the sustainable housing projects that he saw and frustrated at the lack of such opportunities at home.  At the same time he missed the land and sea where he grew up and felt a strong connection with Devon.  He explored his family history and reached back into the lives of his ancestors feeling a growing sense of connection with himself and the land of his birth.

He is now working to set up an affordable ecological housing project: “affordable homes that don’t cost the earth”.   This Project is a culmination of his work with species conservation and research, together with the sustainable living projects that he visited while travelling.

He sees himself working with social and environmental projects for his lifetime. He is interested in and revitalised by nature - insects, birds, animals and fish, plants and trees – and  tapping into the essence of experience!

He also enjoys the ocean and fishing and surfing, reading, being with friends old and new, communication, good food and drink that is grown and prepared with love and respect.

From the learning journey experiences he hopes to be inspired, humbled, more passionate and direct.
