While Lawrence was the EIPIN scholar at the Intellectual Property Research Institute in London he became aware that the emerging doctrine of building an economy on raw ideas (the ‘knowledge economy’) was likely to favour only those who had access to the rather refined tools needed to operate it. This seemed to him to leave a large number of UK citizens with highly uncertain futures when faced with low wage competition from emerging economies.
He therefore teamed up with Lez, who was studying for an masters degree in Environmental Architecture, to set up Creative Paper Wales, a company that would demonstrate how it was possible to build a business in the UK with low technical means and capital and importantly, unassailable environmental credentials that would survive/exclude competition from overseas operators.
The launch brand, Sheep Poo Paper™, is a perfect example of how the imagination is the most essential tool in this new economic reality and they seek to demonstrate how a recycling ethos combined with comprehensive intellectual property management can produce sustainable business success.
The “Twll Golau” (Light at the End of the Tunnel) paper mill in Snowdonia is now in full production and their website can be viewed at www.creativepaperwales.co.uk .
