Mapping Our Award-making

UnLtd commissioned the Department of Gematic Engineering at University College London to provide regional profiles of our awards. Tom Hales, of UCL, used MapInfo software to map awards, applications and rejected applications across the UK. The project used the Index of Multiple Deprivation to see whether our awards reach individuals from deprived communities, those most in need of positive change. The research found that 40% of awards across England and Wales reached award winners from the top 20% of the most deprived communities. You can download a summary of the project here or contact UnLtd Research if you are interested in the full report.

Developing Rural Social Enterprise in North Yorkshire

UnLtd, The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs commissioned ERS in November 2005 to evaluate the Developing Rural Social Enterprise in North Yorkshire project. The project, jointly funded by UnLtd and the North Yorkshire Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) Programme, commenced in April 2004. As part of the project, UnLtd supported 38 Award Winners and their projects in rural North Yorkshire.

As part of the evaluation, ERS reviewed project related documents, interviewed eight stakeholders and four Award Winners (individuals who received an award). In addition, all 38 Award Winners were surveyed. 17 (45 per cent) responded. TO read the End of Project Evaluation, Final Report and Executive Summary

Biographic Case Studies of Social Entrepreneurs

How would you define a Social Entrepreneur? Are there common biographic trends that influenced their genesis as Social Entrepreneurs? Helena Plater-Zyberk, one of UnLtd's 2005 MBA interns, shed light on these issues by conducting biographic case studies of 12 social entrepreneurs. They had all been supported by UnLtd. The research report, now available on our web-site, provides a fascinating snapshot of what drives and motivates the people we support. As outlined in the report, all research participants shared indeed biographic trends and personal characteristics. Thanks to Helena's research, our understanding of these characteristics and the individuals we support has been consolidated. This piece of research is a milestone for UnLtd Research. It is our first piece of research in the public domain. What's more important, it is a fascinating read for which I would like to thank Helena and the twelve research participants, who kindly shared their time, memories and personal experiences.

Longitudinal Impact Evaluation

UnLtd Research is developing and conducting our internal impact evaluation. Project aim is to assess short and long-term benefits of our awards at four interconnected levels (individual; community; project; policy/practice). We will reassess a cohort of our Award Winners annually over five years, ending in August 2010. First round of project results will be available in August 2006.
